ABQnews| Deutschland / EU | Die konservative Europäische Volkspartei (EVP) beginnt heute ihren Parteitag in Finnland, auf dem ein Spitzenkandidat für die Europawahl im Mai 2019 bestimmt wird (13.00 Uhr). Im Rennen sind der CSU-Politiker Manfred Weber und der finnische Ex-Regierungschef Alexander Stubb. Die Entscheidung fällt am Donnerstag in geheimer Wahl.
Die EVP als derzeit stärkste Fraktion im Europaparlament geht davon aus, dass ihr Spitzenkandidat im kommenden Jahr Nachfolger von EU-Kommissionspräsident Jean-Claude Juncker wird. An dem EVP-Treffen in Helsinki nimmt auch Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel (CDU) teil. Sie trifft dort am Mittwochabend auch den finnischen Ministerpräsidenten Juha Sipilä zu einem bilateralen Gespräch.
