ABQnews| EU / USA / UN / WHO | Der EU-Außenbeauftragte Josep Borrell hat den von US-Präsident Donald Trump verkündeten Stopp der Zahlungen an die Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO) scharf kritisiert. Die Entscheidung sei “zutiefst” bedauerlich, erklärte Borrell am Mittwoch im Onlinedienst Twitter. “Es gibt keinen Grund, der diesen Schritt zu einem Zeitpunkt rechtfertigt, an dem die Anstrengungen (der WHO) mehr denn je erforderlich sind.”
Trump hatte am Dienstag den Stopp der US-Zahlungen an die Weltgesundheitsorganisation verkündet. Er warf der WHO ein “Missmanagement” in der Corona-Krise vor. So habe die Organisation von Einreisesperren abgeraten und die tatsächliche Lage in China als Ursprungsort des Virus nicht ausreichend untersucht. “Tausende Menschenleben” hätten gerettet und schwerer wirtschaftlicher Schaden vermieden werden können, wenn die WHO besser gearbeitet hätte, sagte Trump.
Die UN-Organisation WHO trage entscheidend zur Eindämmung der Coronavirus-Pandemie bei, widersprach Borrell. Die Krise sei “nur mit vereinten Kräften” zu überwinden.
