ABQnews| EU / Brüssel | Die EU-Staats- und Regierungschefs kommen am Donnerstag zu ihrem letzten Gipfel in diesem Jahr zusammen (14.00 Uhr). Bei dem Treffen in Brüssel soll geklärt werden, ob sich die EU-Mitgliedstaaten zu dem Ziel bekennen, Europa bis zum Jahr 2050 zum ersten klimaneutralen Kontinent der Welt zu machen. Osteuropäische Länder wie Polen machten bis zuletzt zur Bedingung, dass sie umfangreiche finanzielle Unterstützung erhalten, um ihre maßgeblich von Kohle dominierte Wirtschaft umzubauen.
Eng damit verknüpft ist die am Abend diskutierte Frage, wie der nächste mehrjährige EU-Haushalt für die Zeit von 2021 bis 2027 aussehen wird. Über Umfang und Schwerpunkte sind die Mitgliedstaaten bisher vollkommen zerstritten. Beschließen werden die EU-Regierungen voraussichtlich, die Wirtschaftssanktionen gegen Russland wegen der Ukraine-Krise um ein weiteres halbes Jahr zu verlängern. Am Freitag tagt der Gipfel dann zur Reform der Eurozone und zur Lage beim Brexit nach der britischen Unterhauswahl vom Donnerstag.
