ABQnews| Deutschland / Berlin | Bundesaußenminister Heiko Maas (SPD) hat zum Auftakt seiner Lateinamerika-Reise für einen engeren Austausch mit den Ländern der Region geworben. “Lateinamerika ist zu lange aus unserem Blick geraten. Wir können es uns nicht leisten, Alliierte im Einsatz für eine faire Weltordnung zu verlieren”, sagte Maas in der Nacht zum Montag vor dem Abflug nach Brasilien. Die lateinamerikanischen Länder seien wichtige Verbündete. “Wir wollen auf der Weltbühne zusammen für Demokratie, Menschenrechte und faire Regeln einstehen”, fügte Maas hinzu.
Die Reise nach Brasilien, Mexiko und Kolumbien bildet den Auftakt für eine neue Lateinamerika-Initiative des Ministers, in deren Rahmen am 28. Mai ein Außenministertreffen in Berlin stattfinden soll. In Brasilien will Maas unter anderem mit dem rechtsradikalen Präsidenten Jair Bolsonaro zusammenkommen. Außerdem ist ein Treffen mit dem brasilianischen Außenminister Ernesto Araújo geplant.
