ABQnews| USA / Washington DC | Das zur Bekämpfung der Corona-Krise geplante gigantische US-Hilfspaket ist vorerst im Senat gescheitert. Bei einer ersten Abstimmung über die Eröffnung der Debatte zu dem Vorhaben verweigerten am Sonntag die oppositionellen Demokraten ihre Zustimmung: Statt der notwendigen 60 gab es nur 47 Ja-Stimmen und ebenso viele Nein-Stimmen.
Die abschließende Abstimmung über das bis zu zwei Billionen Dollar (1,869 Billionen Euro) schwere Hilfspaket sollte eigentlich am Montag stattfinden. Wegen des anhaltenden Widerstands der Demokraten warnten die Republikaner vor einem Kurssturz an den US-Aktienmärkten am Montag. Die Demokraten hatten moniert, dass das Hilfspaket nicht genügend Hilfen für Arbeitnehmer und Privathaushalte vorsehe.
In den USA wurden nach Angaben der Johns-Hopkins-Universität in Baltimore bereits mehr als 32.000 Infektionen mit dem neuartigen Coronavirus nachgewiesen. 389 Infizierte starben. Um die Pandemie einzudämmen, gelten für mehr als ein Drittel der US-Bürger inzwischen Ausgangsbeschränkungen.
