ABQnews| EU / Brüssel | Die EU-Staats- und Regierungschefs kommen am Donnerstag zu einem Sondergipfel zum nächsten Sieben-Jahres-Haushalt der Union zusammen (15.00 Uhr). Vor dem Treffen lagen die Positionen der 27 Mitgliedstaaten zu dem über eine Billion Euro schweren Budget weit auseinander. Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel (CDU) erwartet “sehr harte und schwierige Verhandlungen”.
EU-Ratspräsident Charles Michel hat im Vorfeld versucht, mit einem neuen Vorschlag für das Budget der Jahre 2021 bis 2027 Bewegung in die verhärteten Fronten zu bringen. Er sieht Kürzungen der Milliardenhilfen für Europas Bauern und Regionen vor, aber mehr Geld für Klimapolitik, Grenzschutz, Forscher und Studenten. Die Pläne stießen auf Kritik von allen Seiten. Wann der Gipfel endet, ist offen. Michel will notfalls am Wochenende weiterverhandeln. Ein Scheitern des Gipfels wird in Brüssel nicht ausgeschlossen.
