ABQnews| EU / China | Das EU-Parlament zeichnet den inhaftierten uigurischen Intellektuellen Ilham Tohti mit dem Sacharow-Preis für Menschenrechte aus. Das erfuhr die Nachrichtenagentur AFP am Donnerstag aus Parlamentskreisen in Straßburg.
Der frühere Wirtschaftsprofessor, der sich für eine Verbesserung der Situation der muslimischen Minderheit der Uiguren in China einsetzt, war 2014 in der Volksrepublik wegen des Vorwurfs des “Separatismus” zu lebenslanger Haft verurteilt worden. Tohti wurde Ende September bereits mit dem Vaclav-Havel-Preis des Europarats ausgezeichnet.
Für den diesjährigen Sacharow-Preis waren neben Tohti drei brasilianische Aktivisten und eine Gruppe junger Kenianerinnen nominiert.
