ABQnews| USA  / UN |  Nach mehr als einem halben Jahr Vakanz entsenden die USA eine neue Botschafterin zu den Vereinten Nationen. Der US-Senat bestätigte am Mittwoch die bisherige Botschafterin in Kanada, Kelly Craft, als neue oberste Diplomatin des Landes bei der UNO.

Die oppositionellen Demokraten hatten sich der Nominierung der 57-Jährigen durch Präsident Donald Trump widersetzt. Sie warfen Craft mangelnde Erfahrung vor und kritisierten ihre enge Beziehungen zur Kohleindustrie. Crafts Ehemann ist ein wohlhabender Kohle-Industrieller.

Bei einer Anhörung im Senat sagte die Diplomatin im Juni zu, sich bei UN-Klimaverhandlungen wegen Befangenheit heraushalten zu wollen, wenn es um Kohle gehe. Zugleich hat sie mit der Aussage für Stirnrunzeln gesorgt, sie glaube in der Klimadebatte “beiden Seiten”. Auch Trump hat immer wieder Zweifel an der menschgemachten Erderwärmung geäußert.

Craft tritt als Botschafterin bei der UNO die Nachfolge von Nikki Haley an. Diese war Ende 2018 überraschend aus dem Amt ausgeschieden. Seitdem war der Posten unbesetzt. Trump hatte zwischenzeitlich die damalige Außenamtssprecherin Heather Nauert zur neuen UN-Botschafterin machen wollen. Diese zog ihre Kandidatur aber zurück und begründete dies mit Strapazen für ihre Familie.
