Einen weiteren Krieg im Nahen Osten könnten sich die Vereinigten Staaten nicht leisten, sagte ein hochrangiger iranischer Regierungsvertreter am Mittwoch. Ein solcher Konflikt hätte “unvorstellbare Konsequenzen”, ergänzte er. Die Führung in Teheran wolle keinen Krieg, sei aber auf alle Szenarien vorbereitet, von “Konfrontation bis Diplomatie”.
Zuletzt hatten sich die Spannungen zwischen den USA und dem Iran durch Anschläge auf Öltanker und Ölanlagen in der Golf-Region verschärft, hinter denen der Iran oder seine Partner vermutet werden. US-Präsident Donald Trump ließ US-Kriegsschiffe und Bomber in die Region verlegen. Trump hatte im vergangenen Jahr das Atomabkommen mit dem Iran aufgekündigt und neue Sanktionen verhängt, um ein stärkeres Entgegenkommen der Islamischen Republik zu erzwingen.
