ABQnews| Großbritannien / Ecuador / Schweden | Die Regierung von Ecuador hat dem festgenommenen Wikileaks-Gründer Julian Assange die Staatsangehörigkeit entzogen. Das gab Außenminister José Valencia am Donnerstag bei einer Pressekonferenz in der Hauptstadt Quito bekannt. Der gebürtige Australier war seit 2017 ecuadorianischer Staatsbürger.
Valencia erklärte, das Außenministerium habe den Schritt bereits am Mittwoch beschlossen. Als Grund sagte der Minister, es seien “mehrere Unregelmäßigkeiten” in Assanges Papieren entdeckt worden.
Assange hatte seit dem Jahr 2012 in der Botschaft Ecuadors in London gelebt und dort politisches Asyl beantragt. Am Donnerstag wurde er von der britischen Botschaft festgenommen, nachdem ihm Ecuador den Asylstatus entzogen hatte.
